MA course ‘Chinese Newspaper Reading’* This course is taught as an elective course to students who are in the 3rd term of their MA study. It deals with the fundamentals of ‘Newspaper Chinese’, which is the basis for modern Chinese formal prose (formalized language). The newspaper articles chosen by the teacher are relevant to contemporary China and provide the starting point for discussions. Gaining access to newspaper Chinese introduces the student to an entirely different type of journalism, and a valuable resource for understanding contemporary China. Texts about the same themes or groups of themes will be viewed and compared to analyze ideological debates in different segments of Chinese society. The course also deals with other kinds of written media in which formalized Chinese is employed (as for instance the internet) and discusses the role of these media in present day China. Same as the MA course Chinese Culture and Society, this course also requires Chinese language proficiency at an advanced level. * This course was part of the study programme 'BA and MA in Business, Language, and Culture (Chinese)' offered at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) between 2007 and 2021. The programme ended in 2021. |
