Curriculum Vitae

Michael Rudolph has studied Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Heidelberg. He is specialized in comparative social and cultural studies with focus on Greater China. After his first research on child prostitution and the social problems of Taiwan's aboriginal people in Taiwan’s Han society, he conducted research on social movements, and the dynamics of rituals in Taiwan. Rudolph’s main interest is directed toward the analysis of cultural interaction of Han-Chinese people and Non-Han, as well as the cultural attitudes and strategies that manifest themselves in the course of their interaction in times of rapid modernization and globalization. He argues that – as a consequence of a series of hegemonic experiences with the West, with Japan, or between different Han-groups and Han and minorities – people in the Chinese speaking world live in differing stages of postcolonial identity construction, which makes their relationships complex and often tension-ridden. During his altogether almost six years of anthropological research in Taiwan, Rudolph has not only gathered insight in the interaction patterns between Han and Non-Han, especially aboriginal peoples, but has also built up much experience in Chinese ways of communication.
